In Another Life

Title: In Another Life
Fandom: BSG
Pairing: Kara/Lee (sort of)
Words: ~2150
Rating: PG
Summary:  Now we sink into a summer afternoon / Central Park in June / Marveling at the bounty our days contain / And we feel it like the shiver of a passing train / That other life, deep underground / You and I / Side by side / We are the next time 'round ~"In Another Life" by Vienna Teng
A/N: Written for workerbee73  who requested a fic about Kara and Lee reincarnated. Which was fantastic because I was playing around with a little world. Everyone in this fic, even if mentioned only tangentially is someone from BSG, same soul, but a different life and thus a different name. I wanna know if you can figure it out.

May 2009

“You’re not actually nervous, are you?” he asked as he watched her dig through her closet, a ritual he had never actually observed since she’d moved in with him. If Dar wasn’t getting into uniform, she was grabbing whatever was on the floor and checking to see if it smelled before tossing it on. Every once in a while, he thought she reminded him of the guys from his fraternity.

“I think there’s some unspoken rule of the universe that you will inevitably do something stupid the first time you meet your boyfriend’s parents. Yes, I’m fucking terrified,” she deadpanned; her voice was muffled from the cascade of clothes she was currently buried in.

“You’re being insane, no you’re beyond insane.”

“They’re going to love you, just like I do.” Heath pushed himself up from the bed and crossed over to the closet, pushing back the clothes to find her standing behind them. “It’s just dinner and a show.

“No, see, that’s where you’re wrong. You’re like the golden child; you’re from Westchester; you went to NYU and Harvard Law,” Dar said jabbing a finger at him.  “You grew up in this cultured family where going to Broadway was just something you did. And me? The only thing I’ve seen on Broadway is the Naked Cowboy playing his guitar. I’m the fucked up foster kid who spent her life being bounced around from family to family and didn’t go to college and can’t get promoted past Sergeant and doesn’t know what you’re actually supposed to wear to go to Sardi’s.”

Smirking, he grabbed her finger and raised it to his lips giving it a quick kiss. “Why do I put up with you?” he asked with a grin.

June 2008

“Thirty-three minutes,” Stacy said as she glanced down at her watch, nearly spilling her drink in the process. “Pay up.” A tipsy giggle escaped her lips as she watched her friends groaning, shifting their weight to dig for their wallets.

“And what was the bet this time?” Dar said as she approached the trio lazily occupying the couches at the far end of the club. Trailing behind her by a few feet, Andrew pushed his way through the crowd.

“How late you guys were gonna be,” Donny muttered as he fished his wallet out of his pocket, digging out a ten dollar bill. “You guys couldn’t have gotten here twelve minutes later?” He passed the cash across the way to Stacy who pocketed the bill triumphantly and turned her gaze towards Naomi

“Or eighteen minutes ago?” she said, handing over her money as well.

Dar kicked her feet up onto the small table in front of her. “Not my fault. Andy gets ready like a girl.”

“Sometimes a guy’s just gotta look his best,” he said, arms spread wide to show off aforementioned ‘best’ before taking a seat next to Naomi.

“You could deal with laying off the Axe,” Dar grumbled. “Makes the whole fucking apartment smell.”

“Sophie likes it,” he said with a grin.

“No self-respecting woman actually likes it. It smells like macho-posturing.” Dar shot a smirk towards the other couch. “Naomi, sniff Andy and tell him he stinks.”

Naomi’s eyebrows knit themselves into the look of a kid that just got caught with her hand in the cookie jar. “I like the smell of Axe.”

Groaning, Dar threw her head back. A smack could be heard even over the sound of the music as her head collided with the steel wall. “Fuck!” she hissed.

“You alright?” Stacy asked.

Before she could answer, Andrew was already talking right over her. “She’s been pissy since she got home from work.”

“I am not pissy,” she snapped. Watching the four pairs of eyes all roll simultaneously she heaved a sigh. “Fine, I’m pissy. Happy?”

 “What happened?” Donny asked.

Stacy’s eyes lit up and she tapped at Dar’s shoulder, beating out some kind of sporadic rhythm. “Was it that guy again?”

“It’s the third fucking time,” she groaned.

“What guy?” Donny asked.

Andrew grinned, “There’s this guy. We ran into him in Central Park about a week ago, by the Balto statue. And he walks up to Dar and asks-”

“Hey, my creep, my story,” she cut him off.

“He’s not a creep.” Stacy sipped at her drink. “He’s a cutie, plus did you see that suit? I think he’s a lawyer or something. Now the guy in high school, he was a creep.”

“There are eight million people living in Manhattan. When you run into the same guy three times in three different parts of the city, insisting he knows you from somewhere, he’s a creep. I wish I could just arrest him for pissing the hell out of me.”

“Where’d you run into him this time?” Stacy asked.

Dar sighed. “I went to Starbucks on my way home and he was there. He brushed up against me acting like it was an accident, and spilled my coffee all over me. I think I might have dumped his drink on him before I stormed out. I swear if I see that guy one more time I… I don’t know, but I’m gonna do something more than ruin one of his stupid suits.”

“Well, I hope you figure it out soon because he just walked in.” Andrew pointed over towards the bar, where in fact, That Guy was standing.

Stacy gave a mumble of appreciation. “He looks better not in a suit.”

“Oh, frak!” Dar hissed as she bit her thumb.

Naomi snorted. “What?”

“I don’t know.” Dar looked up. “I think I was trying to say ‘fuck’ and then switched to ‘crap’ and then switch back again. I don’t know. Ugh, I can’t think straight when he’s around.”

Without so much as a moment of thought she pushed herself up from her seat.

“Where’re you going?” Naomi called after her.

As she stormed towards the bar, she called back over her shoulder, “To tell him to cut it the fuck out.” She pushed her way through the crowded dance floor, ducking and weaving through the mass of gyrating bodies towards the bar.

“Hey,” she snapped as she stepped up alongside him. “What the hell are you doing here?”

He turned towards her and she watched the flicker of recognition flash through his eyes. “I’m just getting a drink. You’re not going to spill this on me too, are you?”

“You need to stop following me, buddy. Because I’m getting sick of this crap, I don’t know what the hell your deal is but-”

“Look, I just came here for a drink with my friend,” he said as said friend waved at her over his shoulder.

“Then why the hell do you keep just… popping up in my life?”

He let out a deep breath. “Okay, first I was in Central Park because it was a nice day. I saw you and got the feeling I knew you from somewhere. I guess I didn’t, no harm, no foul.”

“What about at the bagel shop?” she asked, folding her arms over her chest.

“I ran into you twice in the same week; I thought it was a funny coincidence,” he replied, mimicking her motion.

“And you actually just bumped into me at the coffee place?”

“I tripped.”

“And now you’re here.”

“Getting a drink with my friend; just like you are, I assume.”

She took a step back and took a long look at the man standing in front of her. He was confident, but not the typical smarmy bar confident that she tended to find around this dump. More than that, she noticed his voice didn’t have a hint of trying to impress her, everything about him was just really fucking genuine. “You actually believe this is all just coincidence, don’t you?”

“Something like that,” he replied with an easy smile. “Heath Vincent, by the way.” He extended his hand.

Raising one eyebrow, she grasped his hand in a firm shake. “Darla Leandros; call me Dar. They don’t find the bodies of the ones that call me Darla.”

“I think I’m going to call you Darla, then,” he said as he drew his hand back.

“Oh wow, you just live dangerously, don’t you?” She meant to smirk, some kind of smug expression to let him know she was in charge of this exchange and would walk away whenever she wanted. Instead, her lips had curled themselves into a smile. Damn it, his genuine was rubbing off on her.

“You sound surprised.”

“I don’t get surprised very often,” she confessed.

He gave a bit of a soft laugh. “So, Darla,” he emphasized the last syllable with an almost wicked little grin. “Can I buy you a drink? To make up for the coffee?”

She gave a nod of consent. “Alright, but only because I like booze a hell of a lot more than I like coffee.”

“She’s really telling him off,” Andrew laughed, as they watched from the other end of the bar.

She’d only turned her back for a second to shoot a deathglare at her friends; she could feel them ogling the situation from across the other side of the club.

“You have a tattoo on your shoulder,” she heard him say.

“And the boy has eyes. Congratulations.” She smirked before throwing back her head and downing a shot of vodka.

“What is it? A bullseye? ‘Aim here?’”

“Very funny, I’m gonna assume you’re drunk and let that slide.”

“Ten bucks says she gives him her phone number by the end of the night,” Donny said.

“Or takes him home,” Naomi giggled.

“I’ll take that bet,” Stacy replied.

Dar played with the three empty glasses in front of her. Had three drinks really happened? She was losing track of time around this guy, what the hell was up with that? Oh well. “Next round’s on me?” she offered.

“I think I’m out,” Heath replied. “I’d like to show up to work tomorrow not hung over.”

She gave a smirking laugh. “That’s half the fun of drinking on a worknight.”

“I don’t think my clients would appreciate it that much.” Heath picked his jacket up off the barstool. “But, in case you’re planning on not running into me on Saturday, too, don’t be by the Balto statue at 2.”

“Well, I give you credit; I have not heard that one before.” He was close enough to her now that she could feel the heat coming off of him, he definitely did not smell like tacky body spray, and his lips were lingering dangerously close to hers. “Tell you what, I’ll avoid you at 2:30. I sleep in late on Saturdays.”

“Alright. So I won’t see you then,” he replied.

Stacy triumphantly pocketed another $20.

“Frak.” Naomi grumbled, before smirking at Dar.

“Are you guys gonna keep doing that?” she groaned.

Hands shoved deep into her pockets, she sauntered up to the statue at 2:33.

“Well now, this is a coincidence,” Heath said as he looked up at her.

Darla shook her head, taking another step towards him. “There’s no such thing. ”

“No such thing as coincidence?” He asked, eyebrow raised.

She turned her gaze up towards the sky, which glimmered as clear and a blue as you could get in the middle of the big city. “If there’s one thing I’ve figured out, it’s that everything happens for a reason. The other night at the bar… I felt like we were picking up where we left off or something.”

“This coming from the girl who spilled coffee on me for asking if I knew her from somewhere,” he chuckled.

Dar slipped her hands out of her pockets. “I had to rule out stalker, first.”

“Had a lot of stalkers, have you?”

“There was this guy in high school who practically had a shrine to me in his locker.”

“That’s… terrifying.”

“You tend to make sure people are on the up and up after something like that. But I think you’re right… I do feel like I know you.” She nudged him with her shoulder. “So now that you’ve got me here, what do you want to do?”

Heath dug his hands into his pockets and got this look on his face, the kind of look when they’re more excited than they’re trying to let on and doing a horrible job of hiding it. “Well, I heard there’s some kind of big event going on at the USS Intrepid, Fleet Week or something like that. I don’t know if you’d be into that, but it’s a pretty cool museum. My dad took me there a few times as a kid.”

She couldn’t help but grin at his enthusiasm. “Yeah, that sounds like it could be fun.”

As the pair headed to snag a taxi, Dar was pretty sure she could see a woman in a red dress and a man in a pinstripe suit watching them.

For those of you playing the guessing game here's the list of people from the fic.
Sophie (mentioned)
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent (mentioned)
The Guy from High School (mentioned)
For the named characters, the names all mean the same as the original BSG names, i.e. Naomi means "beautiful" just as her previous life's name would have. However, tricky, one up there is based on a title, and another on a callsign.

Dar and Heath are not up there because if you haven't figured that out I don't know if I can speak to you. :)
Kara and Darla both mean "Dear"
Lee and Heath are both names derived from fields, lands, meadows, etc...

If you wanna make guesses here I will send you a message so as not to ruin the guessing game for others.

Aaaaand the thing about the Intrepid. I decided to stick that in because my brother went to the Intrepid shortly after I started showing him BSG and he just kind of flipped out with glee and was talking aout it for a long time so I thought it might be a good thing to stick in.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this... piece of insanity.

Aw. This is kinda cute. Imagined them in their BSG cast faces, but cute none the less! I'm pretty sure I figured everyone out, but I won't spoil the surprise for everyone. ;0)

Don't worry, I totally imagined everyone in their BSG faces as well. It's how I kept myself from being completely out of character.

Heh. Kara being called Darla and Lee being called Heath just kind of cracked me up for some reason.

Ah the return of FRAK! Hee

OOH I want to play the game.

Sophie (mentioned)--Sharon (or Athena)
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent (mentioned)--The Adamas or alternately Bill and Laura
The Guy from High School (mentioned)--Leoben

Balto Statue--Baltar (you stealthy thing you!)
May. 7th, 2009 09:06 am (UTC)
The alternate names I had down were Amy and Brad which didn't work for me when I was writing it. XD
May. 7th, 2009 10:00 am (UTC)
Okay here's my guess for who's who.
Andrew = Helo
Stacy = Dee
Naomi = Cally
Donny = Chief
Sophie (mentioned)= Athena
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent (mentioned)= The Adamas or Bill & Laura
The Guy from High School (mentioned) = Leoben

This was a great story. I think beside who was Lee & Kara, the only one that I initial guessed right was Helo. After "Andrew" mentioned "Sophie", I got lost and temporarily gave up so that I can finish the fic. Afterwards, I researched the names and came up with the answers.

PS: To reply back, go here. I request this because I'm using my sister's LJ account (I don't feel like getting my own) and I stay away from her message box. Therefore, a message regarding my guess would not reach me if sent through LJ.

I don't usually read K/L stuff, but I was intrigued by the guessing game advertised. :)

This was cute and sweet, with the banter charmingly affectionate.
May. 7th, 2009 11:43 am (UTC)
Thank you. :)

Oooooh, this was so much fun!!! I loved the banter-- it felt like pilots. Such wonderful chemistry, loved all the interaction with the frinds, loved the callbacks to the show, loved the send of deja vu they had the whole time.

Also-- love the head Caprica and Baltar mentions. Made me giggle.

Well done girl!!! Thank you so much for giving us reincarnated pilots. : )

:D I'm so glad you liked it, hon.

Thanks for actually motivating me to get this idea out of my head and onto paper... or a computer... whatever.

For insanity, this is pretty sweet.

May. 7th, 2009 03:46 pm (UTC)
Thank you
May. 7th, 2009 05:12 pm (UTC)
Very cute. My guesses:
Andrew - Helo
Mr & Mrs Vincent - Bill and Laura
The Guy from High School - Leoben

After these it gets trickier.
Donny - Chief
Sophie, Stacy and Naomi are kind of hard to figure out, I think. Stacy makes me think of Boomer, when she and Kara were friends. Sophie could be Athena, but also Racetrack. I'm not very good at this, and now I don't have time to ponder anymore, so I'll just give up and get back to work.
May. 7th, 2009 06:00 pm (UTC)
I enjoyed this lots :)
My guesses:
Andrew = Helo
Stacy = Dee
Sophie = Athena
Mr. & Mrs. Vincent = Bill and Laura
high school stalker = Leoben
I don't know about Naomi or Donny...I would say Racetrack and the Chief, but the meanings don't match.
May. 7th, 2009 06:00 pm (UTC)
Whoo, glad you enjoyed this.
May. 8th, 2009 03:59 am (UTC)
So much fun! And I love that Head!Six and Head!Baltar got a cameo at the end. **snicker**
May. 8th, 2009 10:51 am (UTC)
Well last we saw them they were chilling in Times Square, Central Park, not that big of a journey. :D They deserved a little screentime.
May. 8th, 2009 03:29 pm (UTC)
Awwww! Loved this piece of insanity :)
May. 9th, 2009 01:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you!
May. 9th, 2009 01:04 pm (UTC)
this was really lovely! Great dialogues, and the guessing was fun!
May. 9th, 2009 01:15 pm (UTC)
:D Glad you enjoyed!
May. 9th, 2009 06:53 pm (UTC)
Oh this was fun. I enjoyed it immensely. And yes, despite the change in name, I believe did a good job with the characterization. I guess it's a true test of skill if your readers can guess who you're talking about without name or place to guide them. Great work!
May. 9th, 2009 06:54 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! :)
May. 22nd, 2009 06:35 am (UTC)
Wonderful! Caught my eye because of the Vienna Teng reference (love her)... don't know if you've read leiascully's darling little pair of reincarnated-Lee-and-Kara-in-NY pieces but the song is just so right for those, and it makes me smile to see it in circulation here too :)

Thanks for sharing!
May. 22nd, 2009 11:40 am (UTC)
Shortly after writing this I wrote another Vienna Teng song titled fic... I'm tempted to test myself to see how many I can do.

I've read one of hers, I didn't know there was another *frolics off to read*

Glad you enjoyed!

I just love the idea of re-incarnated BSG characters. This was awesome-great idea and well written. Highly enjoyable =)

You know, right up until the last second of DaybreakII I thought we were going to catch a glimpse of our fav characters in the NY crowd. A cool little nod to "all this has happened before..."

Silly me. That would have taken time away from the dancing robots.

Ok, enough bitter. Great fic! =)
Jun. 13th, 2009 12:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah... I was expecting a little glimpse of people in the crowd too... if I had my way that's what it would've been. The dancing robots were lame. I didn't like the whole anti-technology bit. I wanted it to be all about the cultural acceptance part.
Feb. 16th, 2012 08:59 pm (UTC)
What a cute story, the dialog just pulled me in (even if it was a little odd reading about Naomi doing this or that, it's not so common a name that I hear/see it many places).
